Croydon High School
Croydon High School appointed SIPTech Construction to construct a new sports pavilion using the Kingspan TEK® Building System and appointed Ashley Group (Main Contractor) to provide the full turnkey package. The proposed construction of the new sports pavilion is upon a green field site. Before the construction phase could begin, a 1km temporary access road had to be implemented, to accommodate strict traffic management systems in place to minimalise disruptions to the adjoining occupants and the adjacent Selsdon golf club. The temporary access road allowed for all construction traffic to reach site in a safe and considerate manner. The new sports pavilion overlooks the on-site swimming pool, dance studio, gym and artificial pitch to provide the pupils with further opportunities to train and compete in excellent and modern-day facilities. The sports pavilion project is part of Croydon High School’s ongoing efforts to improve the facilities for its pupils and also the surrounding community, who are able to make full use and have access to the pavilion too. The construction of the sports pavilion coincided with the school’s 140th birthday anniversary celebration.
SIPTech Construction designed, supplied and installed the Kingspan TEK® SIPs System to create the sports pavilion core structure. SIPs panels were specified due to the benefit of being able to fully maximise the design flexibilities the system offers. This allowed for creation of large and spacious rooms to be designed out using the TEK® systems, which avoids the reliance and dependence of large steel/glulam frames which may have been required for additional support on a traditional timber frame build. In conjunction with the superior design characteristics the system offers, the benefits of the offsite construction and the speed of the build ensured that the SIPs installation caused minimal disruption to the surrounding community and occupants. The project programme and deliveries all ran in accordance with the project timeline and was meticulously planned out to ensure that the pavilion was constructed in a swift and considerate timescale that further mitigated any possible disruptions. Once the SIPs structure was erected, Ashley Group completed the full turnkey package, providing both the high specification internal and external finishes. Upon the external elevations, timber cladding was fitted along with aluminium windows and door sets. Ashley Group installed internal acoustic ceiling panels along with internal acoustic partitioning. All the shower and WC areas required the fit of Altro Whiterock sheet cladding. Full M&E installations were serviced via new incoming water, gas, drainage and electrical supplies, with approximately 700l/m within service trenches. Ashley Group also formed a new plant room, which consisted of a gas fired boiler, serving a LTHW heating system and a gas fired instantaneous water heater supplying 15No. showers.
The full benefits of modern methods of construction were brought into fruition during this project build. The key element was to cause minimal disruption to the surrounding community and occupants which was achieved through the prefabricated nature of the TEK® SIPs Building System and the precise project management. The new sports pavilion was delivered on time and within budget and was the most effective construction solution to adopt for this project. The Croydon High School Sports Pavilion project demonstrates that the Kingspan TEK® SIPs Building System is the next generation of sustainable modular based timber construction methods.
