SIPs for BREEAM Ratings

What is BREEAM?

The Building Research Establishment’s Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM) is the world’s most developed and renowned environmental assessment tools used for buildings across the globe. BREEAM factors construction performance and building design above and beyond the typical regulatory requirements, providing a recognised baseline of sustainable best practice.

BREEAM aims to encourage design that mitigates the impact of buildings on the environment, provide recognition of best practice and to highlight awareness of and encourage more sustainable lifestyles. BREEAM ratings are a global and highly prestigious third-party accreditation of construction standards.

Structural Insulated Panels and Achieving BREEAM Rating

Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs) can assist in achieving BREEAM certification of ‘Excellent’, or even ‘Outstanding’. This is primarily achieved through the reduction of CO2 emissions. In terms of both insulation and airtightness, SIPs provide a highly energy efficient building envelope. SIPs can achieve U-values as low as 0.10 W/m².K and beyond with extra internal insulation. In addition, SIPs offer minimal cold bridging and excellent insulation continuity throughout the build, contributing to the overall thermal performance.

A key component that the Kingspan TEK SIPs Build System offers is very low levels of air leakage. Combined with factory engineered joists, figures of airtightness lower than 2m³/hr/m² have also been achieved and recorded.

The properties that the Kingspan TEK SIPs Build System offers provide an excellent foundation to achieve conservation of energy during the lifespan of the building and optimal BREEAM credits, where a high performing building envelope will be achieved.

Structural Insulated Panels Performance in BREEAM Assessments

Structural Insulated Panels offer high levels of air tightness and high levels of insulation, SIPs have been prescribed for projects aiming to exceed above and beyond the standard regulatory requirements and to provide BREEAM ratings up to the standard of ‘Outstanding’. This is a clear indication that Structural Insulated Panels have an imperative role to play as the industry strives to achieve more robust and higher standards.

Predominantly the main advantages of the Kingspan TEK SIPs Build System lend upon CO2  reduction and high energy efficiency, there are number of other key benefits that structural insulated panels deliver which can contribute further to the BREEAM certification:

  • U-Values as low as 0.10 W/m².K can be achieved by the Kingspan TEK Build System

  • Overall maintenance and lower running costs due to the construction of a value engineered build

  • Facilities and follow-on trades can be drafted in three times faster when compared to builds constructed with traditional methods

  • Structural Insulated Panels are produced offsite resulting in up to 80% less wastage onsite

  • Structural Insulated Panels are not dependant on weather conditions, minimising disruption to the construction programme

  • The Kingspan TEK Build System is stronger than brick and block and timber frame builds

  • Attractive resale value due to the excellent thermal insulation values that can be achieved

  • Manufactured SIPs have zero Ozone Depletion Potential (ODP) and does not deteriorate over time

  • SIPs can be used to construct up to 4 storeys high
